Neck Lift: Frequently Asked Questions

A surgical neck lift is used to enhance the contour of the neck, chin, and jawline by tightening and or removing the loose neck skin and muscle. It is also called platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty and is often combined with other surgical procedures such as a facelift or facial liposuction.

Am I a good candidate for a surgical Neck Lift?

If you have sagging neck skin (turkey skin) and loose soft tissue then a surgical neck lift would be an excellent option for you. If you also have neck fullness (double-chin) or jowling, then a neck lift is combined with liposuction or facelift to get the best result.

How is a surgical Neck Lift performed?

The loose skin and muscle of the neck are typically removed to create a smooth contour and definition of the neck and jawline. A mini-neck lift can also be performed in suitable candidates where a suture is used to resuspend the tissue and a smaller incision is made. Surgery is performed under mild-moderate sedation and takes 1-2 hours. It is an outpatient procedure with no need for overnight monitoring.

What is recovery like for a surgical Neck Lift?

There is typically bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the surgical site for 5-10 days. A bandage dressing is worn after surgery to minimize bruising and swelling and occasionally a thin tube is placed to prevent the collection of blood or fluid.

How long do results last after a surgical Neck Lift?

Typically 10-15 years.

Are there any non-surgical alternatives for a Neck Lift?

The vertical bands of the neck can be softened with botulinum toxin (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport) and the loose skin, muscle, and soft tissue can be tightened using radiofrequency, ultrasound energy, or laser skin resurfacing in suitable candidates.
